More Than Machines?

Face to face they stand
Brain to brain
Two-eyed flesh machine
And one-eyed plastic terminal
Interacting systems
Inputting, outputting, precious data.

Face to face they sit
A complex team
Driven to perform
With error-free precision
In a controlled mini-world
Ruled by the god of technology.

Face to face they lie
Worlds apart
Stark, cold plastic eye
Flashing programmed data;
Warm, sensitive flesh eyes
Flashing non-programmable twinkles.
Face to face they are
A new species
Ruled by the god of technology.

Welcome to my little corner of the Internet. The primary purpose of this site, is to test new technology and features of Open-Source programs, and post my notes and experience of said testing.

The site is under construction — still needs a lot of work on the design and content :-)

Compiling your own Linux.

My first encounter with Linux was back in 95/96 — was handed a computer, a CD and a Redhat Book on how to install. Took me ages just to get past the Partitioning, but eventually I managed to get a working installation. Played around and got X running and could connect to IRC. From here things took speed, and soon I was playing with compiling Source Code, and installing new Kernels. (Took ages to download using a 56K Modem).

Then in 2000/2001 I read an article about a project (Linux From Scratch) where you would create your own Linux system by compiling everything from scratch — I was already hooked halfway through the article :-)

I“ve been using this system/approach for servers and desktops ever since. I like the control I have over which services are installed, and that I don't have to rely on others to provide packages for my system.

The Server.

My site is running on a Personal on-premise Server, which hosts a lot of the services/roles I'm testing:

Network and Security:

  • IP-Tables
  • OpenSSH
  • DenyHosts
  • Let's Encrypt
  • Courier Authlib
  • SASL Auth Daemon

  • Apache
    • Memcached
    • Pagespeed
  • PHP (With FPM)
  • ModX CMS

  • qMail
  • Courier IMAP
  • ClamAV
  • SpamAssassin
  • qMail-Scanner

Other Services:

  • MariaDB
  • ProFTPD
  • Samba
